Picture book creators Ashley Bryan and Janice Harrington invite young children to experience the magic of story in many forms -- the oral tradition, the printed page, song, performance poetry and illustrative art. High-energy fun and inspiration for all!
Ashley Bryan has dedicated his life to encouraging children to believe in their own ability to create beauty in the world. A three-time Coretta Scott King Award winner and an accomplished artist and storyteller, his thirty-fourth children's book is the autobiographical Words to My Life's Song. Janice Harrington is a notable storyteller, poet and picture book author. Going North, a poetic retelling of her family's migration from Alabama, and The Chicken-Chasing Queen of Lamar County, a celebration of her childhood ambition to outwit a chicken, are both Red Clover Award selections in Vermont.

Mysterious doings take center stage and two amateur sleuths are on the case in the novels featured at this event for middle grade students. In The Postcard, Tony Abbott's fast paced and highly original mystery within a mystery, thirteen-year-old Jason uncovers extraordinary family secrets after his grandmother's death in Florida. Abbott is the author of over eighty books, including a southern-gothic mystery series for young adults and the Secrets of Droon fantasy adventure series for emerging readers, which has nearly eight million copies in print.

Anna Dewdney, well known for her endearing picture books about a young llama, takes families with young children on a journey to meet another intriguing animal, the pangolin of Southeast Asia. Slides of her family's recent trip to Vietnam to learn more about this shy endangered mammal accompany an exciting sneak preview of her upcoming picture book, Roly Poly Pangolin. Dewdney's bestselling Llama, Llama books have been made into plays, ballets and a musical with songs by Dolly Parton.
12:15 - 1:15 pm Secrets of Droon – Tony Abbott
River Garden; family event
Join Tony Abbott for a celebration of Droon, an ancient land full of magic, suspense and adventure. Readers’ theater, a Droon trivia contest and a display of student art complement this author’s talk about the fantasy world he has created. With nearly eight million copies in print, Abbott's Secrets of Droon series is wildly popular with emerging readers, and The Postcard, his latest book for older students, won the 2009 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Juvenile Mystery.
4:15 pm - 5:30 pm Exploring Possibilities – Donna Freitas and Peter Gould

Two debut young adult novelists will introduce readers to three quirky and memorable young adults who love to write. In Donna Freitas’ The Possibilities of Sainthood, Antonia Lucia Labella has two secrets: at fifteen, she’s still waiting for her first kiss, and she wants to be a saint -- an official one, and preferably without dying. Hilarious letters to the Pope and daily dramas in pursuit of love ensue. Freitas is the author of many nonfiction books, including Sex and the Soul: Juggling Sexuality, Spirituality, Romance and Religion on America’s College Campuses.
In Peter Gould’s Write Naked, Victor and Rose Anna are each making their way in the world through their writing, one using an antique Royal typewriter and the other a vintage fountain pen. Yet another story emerges as their offbeat romance brings new dimensions to their explorations of life's mysteries. Gould is the author of the play A Peasant of El Salvador, which has been performed all over the world. He works in youth theatre directing, teaching, and bringing Shakespeare to life for young people.

Beginning with a slide show that includes a pseudo-biographical take on his life, art from his picture books and kid-friendly New Yorker cartoons, this cartoonist and children’s book illustrator also introduces the audience to the scribble game and reads one of his books. Well known for his bestselling picture books and New Yorker cartoons and cover art, Bliss's most recent titles are the picture book Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken; Death By Laughter, a cartoon collection for adults; and Luke on the Loose, a breakthrough comic book.
